Lews Castle

Where the wealthy once played
in luscious ballrooms
dividing the interior
to shoot and fish

Where their chattels,
enumerated for poverty,
had less than nothing
to live on and pay with

Lowly walls sinking into the ground
only chimneys left standing
empty hearths cold
staring out over empty moorland

The mansion too was left
abandoned and crumbling
young ones were once taught
from where their elders were ruled

Where the wealthy once played
we now learn of their days
and those they subdued
from near and from far

Resplendent yet empty
the way it once was,
but no longer is,
Lews Castle

Arnish

Where the vagrant prince
once refuge sought -
he was declined
yet not betrayed

The old farmhouse
on the peninsula
just off the moorlands
overlooking the town

Were it to return
it would be suspended
many feet
in the air

The tranquil loch
laps the shore
by the side of the road
under the monument

A path runs on its banks
to a remote
yet beautiful
quiet inlet

The lighthouse beyond,
at the peninsula's end,
signalling the entrance to
the harbour bay

Its light never reached
to where many were once lost
although but a mile away
at the reefs of the Beasts

Heavy industry thunders
shrieks and grinds
cutting and welding
for oil, wind and wave

A revolving door
closed open shut
not reliable for
the island's future

Not for that
will the diaspora return
Not for a phantasmagora
dreamt up in a distant room

The island remains
Its people come and go
Twice a day, and at night
past Arnish Point

Time

Slowly the clocktower
chimes out the hours
But hours do not count
when you go with the tide

What's hidden at high water
lies exposed 6 hours later
Irrespective of the hands
on a timepiece

Where barrels once stacked
and fish were packed up
Cars are now left
by those crossing the sea

Only a statue reminds
of the hard hard workers
As the water rises below
and falls twice a day

A curtain of rain
hides the lighthouse from view
As much as the future
is obscure to us all
